March Madness

In the month of March, our board took steps to address safety concerns for COVID-19.  In the beginning, cleaning supplies were provided to disinfect before and after the support groups.  Next, a difficult decision was made, again to address safety concerns, to shut down the coffee station.  Recovery members & coffee typically go hand-in-hand, so it was not an easy choice to make; however, SAFETY remained the operative word.  As members opted to stay home, plus a member having reported they were experiencing symptoms, the board members made another the tough decision to close down, but the governor made the final choice for everyone.

How will we manage our recovery without the opportunity to attend support groups?  Fear about the doors closing scared people.  How will we reach the suffering addict/alcoholic?  How will they know how to find help?  Should we meet in the parking lots?  In members’ homes? Logic tells us to pay attention

Several members worked quickly to create a venue to the recovery groups to meet online via Zoom.  We taped signs to the door with phone numbers and access to the virtual meetings.  Board members reached out the local recovery groups by person and/or posting in social media closed groups, probation, and local treatment centers to ensure the suffering addict/alcoholic will find the help they seek, online or by phone.  The original 12-step program was created in 1935 where groups met once a month, across the state, and with their spouses.  If men and women could find recovery in the days before social media, we felt confident people today could reach us online.  Access the groups via Zoom which (now) requires a password for all meetings.  Message us for the codes and passwords.   The Portage Recovery created a Utility GoFundMe to offset our monthly expenses.  What humbled us was the overwhelming support we received!  Within three hours, we received $170 via GoFundMe.  $2100 in cash and online donations in six days!  Because of the generosity of our friends, we were able to cover two months worth of utility bills!! Grateful! No words can describe our gratitude for each donation, post on Facebook asking people to help, and offers to help in so many ways.

March Madness!  Everything is shutting down.  Our groups could no longer meet.  Events cancelled.  Portage Recovery Association survived March Madness, aka COVID Shutdown.

Portage Recovery GoFundme Fundraiser

Today, the PRA board made the difficult decision to close its doors. We felt it was more important to prevent the spread of this illness by launching a virtual list of 12-step meetings.

Many thanks for the generosity of our friends! So far, PRA received $505 in donations…in 24 hours! Consider sharing the fundraising link in your groups and personal pages. We are asking our friends and community to support our place with $5-$25 or more in donations towards the monthly expenses during this time.

12 Tips to Staying Sober

Source: Grapevine Magazine
  1. Line up extra 12-step activities (help on the phones, speak, empty the ashtrays).
  2. Be host to friends, especially newcomers, at home or at a coffee shop.
  3. Keep your 12-step telephone list with you at all times.
  4. Find out about holiday meetings or celebrations in your local groups.
  5. Skip any drinking occasions you’re nervous about.
  6. If there’s one you can’t skip, take an recovery friend–or keep candy handy.
  7. Don’t think you have to stay late (plan an “important date” in advance).
  8. Go to church. Any church. And don’t forget about extra meetings.
  9. Don’t sit around brooding; catch up on reading, museums, walks, letters.
  10. Don’t project about holiday temptations: remember “One day at a time.”
  11. Even if you cannot give material gifts, enjoy the beauty of holiday love.
  12. Carry the message. Give the joy away, and it will be yours to keep.
  13. Reach out to your community via social media
